Caring for Your Charm Bracelets by: Kristina Louis (Guest Post)

Charm bracelets are the ideal way to mark the special moments in your life. Every time something significant occurs, you add a charm to remember it by – marriages; births; anniversaries; and even bereavements. Treasuring the memory of a loved one, after all, is one of the most important functions of jewellery.

So the last thing you want is to find that your charm bracelet has degraded in quality. If you let silver or freshwater pearls get too dirty it can be quite hard to clean a delicate bracelet. So here are my top tips on keeping your charm bracelet in tip top condition – in other words, keeping those memories shining and fresh for the whole of your life!

1: Charm bracelets made of silver and freshwater pearls should be cleaned regularly and carefully. A freshwater pearl is a porous object so it can’t be cleaned with anything wet. Instead you should clean it with a soft dry cloth – and the more regularly you do it the less vigorous you will have to be.

2: Silver is cleaned with a dedicated silver cleaning cloth. Note: You can’t clean silver with a gold cleaning cloth. The two materials are treated with different chemicals. The best way to clean delicate charm bracelets is to lay them on the cloth, and use the edges of the cloth folded over to gently rub the bracelet on the flat surface.

3: Never immerse freshwater pearls in water.

4: Keep freshwater pearls away from makeup sprays. Don’t put your charm bracelet on until after your makeup and perfume have been applied and are dry. And remove charm bracelets before you start applying nail varnish remover.

5: Keep your charm bracelets away from other jewellery, particularly if they have freshwater pearls on them. The pearls are soft and will be easily scratched or nicked by harder jewellery. You should remove the bracelet when you do household work, gardening and cooking. And take it off at night.

6: Charm bracelets should be stored in a soft jewellery bag away from direct sunlight. Do not store your charm bracelet in a plastic container.

7: The charms on a charm bracelet are delicate and often intricately made. If charms have moving parts, such as hinges for tiny lockets, you should refrain from constantly using them. The miniature locket is designed to keep a secret inside – and of course a secret isn’t a secret if you’re always opening the locket to have a look at what’s in it!

Follow the instructions for care that you get when you buy your bracelet – and be sure to only buy charms made of sterling silver or genuine gold. Inferior metals can have an adverse reaction with the material the charm bracelet is made of.

Don’t overhang your bracelet with charms. Too many and they’ll bang against each other, which over time can cause scratches and discolouration.
